Before the advent of pen and paper, writing took the form of inscriptions on wax, clay, stone, and metal. The tool used for making these inscriptions is called a stylus or scribe, and could be made of metal, wood, bone, or reed. Typically one end would be sharpened to a point, and the other flattened into a wedge shape which could be used to “erase” wax or soft clay, or emboss thinner materials.
This stylus is hand forged from bronze with a twisted grip and a fan shaped end. Its polished bronze has a pale coppery tone but will darken with use over time to a burnished brown. The flat end can be used to “erase” inscribed marks on soft materials.
This stylus measures about 6.25” long.
