Hekate

Heart of the Temple, Heart of the Mystery

Queen of the Crossroads

Hekate is a powerful and multifaceted goddess of the ancient world, of mysterious origin and wide-ranging mythology. In the Hellenic world she was seen as a powerful Titan goddess, one of the primordial elemental forces who ruled the earth before the rise of the Olympian gods. Unlike many of her kin, Hekate was said to have supported the Olympians in their ascent, and for this allegiance Zeus granted her a rare honor: continued sovereignty over portions of the Earth, Sea, and Sky.

But Hekate’s origin story is much older and deeper than what the surviving Greek myths suggest. A great deal of evidence points toward her original home being in Anatolia, the historical region of Caria, near the southwestern coast of what is now Türkiye. Her cult center was located at Lagina, where the remains of her magnificent Hellenistic temple still stand, and where many devotees and seekers continue to visit today.

Across more than two millennia, poets, playwrights, and historians have preserved facets of Hekate’s mythology and worship, from some of the earliest surviving literary sources to the hundreds of epithets that attest to her complex, sweeping range of powers. In recent decades, her cult has experienced a remarkable revival, with ever increasing numbers of modern seekers drawn to her mysteries. To some, she is the Goddess of Night, the Moon, and the Underworld. To others she is the Queen of Witches and Leader of the Wild Hunt. To still others, she is an eternal and transcendent cosmic power—the Source of Souls and Keeper of the Keys to the Cosmos.

What unites all of these visions of the Goddess is her quintessential role as threshold-walker. Hekate moves between worlds, realms, and states of being. Like the Crossroads itself, she stands at the juncture of all paths, yet belongs to none. She is neither of this world nor the Otherworlds beyond, but embodies the living pathways that connect them, guiding seekers along the way to Gnosis.

As the presiding Goddess of this Temple, Hekate holds the torch for each of us to find our way to the Heart of the Mystery.

Dark Moon Deipnon Rituals

As we open the virtual doors of the Crossroads Goddess Temple this spring, our primary devotional offering will be a series of online rituals with and for Hekate as the Temple’s honorary goddess. In the spirit of the classical deipnon meal and its associated traditions, this ritual will be a monthly Dark Moon Purification for the Temple community. The first circle will be April 17—details coming soon.
